The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana, (CLOGSAG) has insisted that civil servants who have accepted positions as Assembly members step down immediately.

The Association stated that the appointments and promotions violated a Supreme Court ruling regarding the political neutrality of civil servants in their roles.

“By the Supreme Court Ruling, it is implied that you can either be an Assembly member or a local staff of the Local Government service and the Civil Service,” the Association in a press release signed by Isaac Bampoe Addo, it’s Executive Secretary said.

The statement strongly urged government appointees to the Assemblies, who were either Civil Service staff or staff of the Local Government Service, to resign immediately or face consequences.

The Association emphasized its commitment to maintaining public perception of neutrality and warned that it would not hesitate to take action.

It called on the government to revoke the appointments of Civil Service and Local Government Service staff who had been sworn in as Assembly members, citing violation of the Supreme Court ruling on neutrality.

Additionally, the statement cautioned CLOGSAG members against accepting appointments or promotions from political entities.

The Association in the statement stressed that it would not compromise on the public perception of its neutrality.

“Again, being sworn in as an Assembly Member, whether as Government Appointee or elected, violates the ethics of the Local Government Services”.

“Members are therefore, advised not to put themselves in any ambivalent position by being both a staff of the service and an Assembly member at the same time” the statement said.
