Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed confidence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be able to break Ghana’s 8-year electoral cycle.

Speaking at the Tsui Maamle Trotro Station in Odorkor, within the Ablekuma North constituency in Accra on Friday, September 27, Mr. Mahama questioned how the NPP could “break the eight” when, according to him, he is firmly holding on to it.

He referenced his position on the ballot paper for the 2024 general elections, where the NDC secured the number 8 spot.

“They say they will break the eight, but I’m the one holding it. Let them try and break it, I’m holding on firmly,” he remarked.

Earlier, Mr. Mahama had expressed his excitement about the NDC’s placement at number 8 on the ballot paper during the Electoral Commission’s balloting session.

Reflecting on the 2016 elections, Mr. Mahama recalled how the NPP criticized the NDC for economic hardships and convinced Ghanaians to vote them out. He mentioned a group of drivers known as “Drivers for Change” who demonstrated against high fuel prices, with the NPP promising to lower fuel costs.

At the time, he said, a gallon of petrol was GHS 14.00. However, he pointed out that under the NPP government, fuel prices have surged, with a gallon now costing GHS 70.00. He emphasized that the GHS 14.00 that once bought a gallon of fuel now only buys a liter.
