The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that the government has fully cleared arrears amounting to GH¢603 million owed to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as of December 2024.

Delivering an address at the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on Friday, July 18, the Minister stated that the payment represents a significant milestone in Ghana’s healthcare financing and demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector.

He indicated that no previous administration in the history of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) had been as timely in releasing funds from the consolidated fund to the National Health Insurance Fund as the current government.

According to him, the government has been making the payments on a monthly basis, reflecting a consistent and proactive approach to funding healthcare.

Mr. Akandoh further disclosed that during the first half of 2025 alone, the NHIA disbursed over GH¢1.38 billion to healthcare providers, pointing to what he described as a more efficient and responsive system.
