The Upper Denkyira East Municipal Police Commander, DSP Simon Boavo, has called on commercial motorbike riders, popularly known as Okada riders, in the municipality to strictly adhere to road traffic rules and regulations to enhance safety and reduce accidents.

He made the call during a get-together programme organised by the Denkyira Mfuom Okada Riders Association, aimed at educating riders on road traffic regulations and responsible riding practices.

Addressing the riders, DSP Boavo stressed that discipline and obedience to traffic laws are critical to saving lives. He urged riders to always wear protective helmets and cautioned them against carrying more than one passenger. He explained that transporting three people on a motorbike is both illegal and dangerous.

The Chairman of the Denkyira Mfuom Okada Riders Association, Baba Fuseni, on his part appealed to government agencies, private individuals and non-governmental organisations to support the association with motorbikes under a work-and-pay arrangement.

He explained that although many young people are interested in engaging in the Okada business as a means of livelihood, they are constrained by the high cost of acquiring motorbikes. He noted that such support would help create employment opportunities and reduce youth unemployment in the area.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira East, Emelia Ankomah, pledged her support to the association, promising to donate two motorbikes to be operated under the work-and-pay system as part of efforts to empower the youth and promote economic activity.

She further urged the riders to be law-abiding and to prioritise safety on the roads, assuring them that responsible conduct would attract greater support from stakeholders.
