In a vibrant celebration of books, storytelling, and the transformative power of literacy, Active Minds Reading Club officially launched the Active Minds Reading Squad on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Presbyterian Basic School and Methodist Basic School in Apirede, Akuapem.

The initiative, designed for Primary pupils, aims to nurture a lifelong love for reading, build essential literacy skills, and empower children to serve as young reading leaders in their schools and communities.

The launch was marked by engaging reading sessions, storytelling activities, and joyful participation from pupils, volunteers, and special guests. As part of the event, books were donated to both schools to support ongoing reading activities. Reading Champions were appointed among the pupils to lead monthly sessions within their squads.

Delivering the keynote address, Ama Achiaa Prempeh, Executive Director of Active Minds Reading Club, highlighted the transformative mission behind the Reading Squad. “This initiative embodies our commitment to fostering a culture of learning, personal growth, and community development,” she stated.
Quoting author Katherine Paterson, she added, “It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading… something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.”

Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority and Special Guest of Honour, commended the Club’s efforts. He encouraged pupils to embrace reading as an academic tool and a meaningful leisure activity that builds confidence and curiosity.

Representing the Apirede Traditional Council, Madam Rose Offei, Chairperson of the Education Committee, reiterated the town’s commitment to literacy development. She emphasised that today’s young readers are tomorrow’s leaders and extended greetings from Okogyeahene Toafom Saforo Okoampah III, Chief of Apirede, who has been a staunch supporter and “chief champion” of the initiative.
Looking Ahead

The Active Minds Reading Squad will roll out several exciting activities, including:
●Literacy competitions with prizes
●A scholarship scheme for dedicated and high-performing students
●University student mentorship, offering tertiary students an opportunity to give back by supporting Squad activities
●Quarterly school visits to engage and monitor progress
●Continued support through cash sponsorships, book donations, educational materials, and training opportunities for teachers
