Malawi’s former president, Bakili Muluzi, has called on incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera to concede defeat to ex-president Peter Mutharika in the 2025 presidential elections.
Provisional figures from the Malawi Electoral Commission show Mutharika leading with approximately 66% of valid votes, while Chakwera trails with around 24%.
The country has yet to officially declare the results, nearly eight days after polls closed.
Speaking to local media, Muluzi urged Chakwera to accept the outcome to ease rising tensions and uphold democratic values.
The call comes amid growing pressure for transparency and calm as the nation awaits the final announcement.
