Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has called on Ghanaians to view the protection and stability of the cedi as a shared duty, insisting that no single institution can shoulder the responsibility alone.
Speaking at the Cedi @ 60 Conference in Accra, where policymakers, economists and industry leaders convened to reflect on six decades of the national currency, Dr. Asiama urged participants to actively engage in the deliberations, describing the future of the cedi as a national project that belongs to everyone.
“Safeguarding the cedi is not the mandate of one institution. It is a collective effort anchored in our confidence in Ghana’s future,” he stated, underscoring the importance of unity and a common vision in strengthening the currency.
He noted that the cedi’s stability depends not only on sound macroeconomic management but also on the daily confidence and behaviour of citizens.
In his view, every Ghanaian from schoolchildren learning basic numeracy to traders and entrepreneurs driving local business has a role in supporting the value of the cedi.
Dr. Asiama expressed confidence in Ghana’s economic outlook, stressing that the next 60 years present an opportunity to “reimagine the cedi” and build a more robust financial system.
He urged stakeholders to share innovative ideas that can help shape a resilient monetary future.
The Governor also expressed appreciation to participants for their dedication and called for a renewed sense of pride in the national currency.
His remarks set the tone for the conference, which feeds into wider conversations on inflation management, exchange rate stability and long-term economic reforms.
