Commercial transport operators across Ghana have announced plans to embark on a nationwide sit-down protest on Thursday, December 18, 2025, if authorities fail to clear traders from roads and designated bus stops within three days.
The warning was issued in a press release dated December 14, 2025, signed by leaders of various transport unions, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Ghana Committed Drivers Association, the True Drivers Union, and other commercial transport groups.
According to the operators, the continued presence of traders on roads, pavements and bus stops poses serious safety risks, worsens traffic congestion, and disrupts the smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
They cited Regulation 117 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), which explicitly prohibits the sale of goods and services on public roads.
“The law is clear. No person shall sell or offer for sale any goods or services on a road,” the statement stressed.
Speaking on the Happy Morning Show on Tuesday, 16th December 2025, the Acting Chairman of Commercial Transportation Operators, Asonaba Nana Wiredu said
operators are demanding that:
All traders vacate roads and bus stops within three days
Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) strictly enforce the road traffic regulations
Relevant authorities ensure that roads and bus stops remain safe and accessible to the public
He warned that failure to comply will compel drivers to withdraw their services nationwide, grounding commercial transport activities on December 18.
“If our demands are not met within three days, no car will move.”
He also called on all commercial drivers to remain united and support the action, describing the protest as a necessary step to reclaim roads and bus stops for their intended use.
