The UK, France, and Germany have formally notified the UN of their intent to reimpose sanctions on Iran, citing violations of the 2015 nuclear deal.
The European trio, known as the E3, triggered the UN’s snapback mechanism after Iran enriched uranium beyond civilian levels and diplomatic talks stalled.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio backed the move, calling Iran’s actions “significant non-performance.”
Iran condemned the decision as “provocative,” accusing the E3 of failing to uphold their commitments after the US withdrew from the deal in 2018.
The UN Security Council will meet Friday August 29 to discuss the sanctions, with a 30-day window left open for renewed negotiations.
