Story By: Ahashie Judeliver Eli

Flagbearer of the NDC and former-President, John Dramani Mahama has suggested a strategy to rejuvenate football in Ghana after the disappointing performance of the Black Stars at AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast.

Ghana failed to secure a single victory during the tournament, leading to the dismissal of coach Chris Hughton and the dissolution of the technical team.

Mahama, who is also the NDC flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 General Elections, intends to collaborate with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to create a robust national team.

He believes that developing homegrown talent is key to achieving success.

“We just came from the Africa Cup of Nations and we performed abysmally and disastrously,” Mahama said.

“We performed abysmally because we are not growing our football.”

“We need to start catching them young, training them, and giving them to local teams to gain experience before they travel abroad.”

Mahama’s vision involves creating a balanced team comprising homegrown players and foreign-based players. He stressed that the core of the Black Stars must consist of domestic players who have trained together for an extended period.

“Domestic players who have trained together for a long time and work as a team, and then we will bring the foreign players to come and blend with them,” Mahama explained.

“If you bring only foreign players, they don’t play together and play in their individual teams, and then when it’s time for competition, and tell them to come and play, it won’t work.”

To achieve this goal, Mahama plans to overhaul Ghana’s football in partnership with the GFA. He believes that building a solid national team requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders.

Currently, the GFA is in search of a new coach.

No allegation of wrongdoing has been proven against me 7 years after being out of office – John Mahama Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress, Former President John Dramani Mahama, says he is not surprised the government has not been able to find anything incriminating about him seven years after leaving office as the president of the republic. He says despite several allegations leveled against him after leaving office, none has been proven. “…..I have been out of office for more than 7 years and 7 months, no allegation of wrongdoing has been proven against me, including the baseless Airbus Brouhaha that this government attempted to cloth me with”, Mr. Mahama said. Speaking at the 10th anniversary commemoration of the late P.V Obeng, the NDC flag bearer drew similarities between himself and the late P.V Obeng citing a case where the late statesman was exonerated by CHRAJ in a case where P.V Obeng was accused of owning a number of houses built with state funds during the Late Former President Rawling’s tenure as a president. Touting the willingness of members of the NDC to ensure probity and accountability, he said members of the NDC do not place themselves above society. He also praised the honesty and humility with which party members subject themselves to investigations by state investigative bodies when the basis for it arises. Former President John Dramani Mahama, has however expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the OSP’s investigations into the Airbus bribery scandal which exonerated him and his brother of any wrongdoing. Commenting on the issue for the first time after the OSP made its investigative report on the case public last Thursday 8th of August, 2024, Mr. Mahama said he felt great that once again he has been vindicated. “Once again today, I say it is a pleasant feeling to stand vindicated”, Mr. Mahama shared. The Office of the Special Prosecutor on Thursday 8th August, 2024 released a full report on the Airbus bribery scandal and identified the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama as the GO1 named preliminary report. However, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng revealed, during a press conference to make the report public, that Mr. Mahama as well as his brother Foster Mahama, did no wrong in the processes of the transaction. The special prosecutor further revealed that he has sent a notice to INTERPOL to undo the red notice on Mr. Foster Mahama, the brother of Mr. John Mahama. Sefah-Danquah
