President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining, known as galamsey, despite facing intense criticism since 2017. During his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Northeast Region on October 15, he emphasized his dedication to eradicating galamsey, even if it means putting his presidency on the line.

The president acknowledged the significant political risks involved but asserted he’s bound by his word and prepared to face consequences. He attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) poor performance in 2020 elections within mining areas to propaganda by National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama.

Notably, the NPP struggled in mining districts, particularly in the Western Region, where they nearly lost ground. This concern underscores the complexity of the issue, with galamsey affecting not only the environment but also political landscapes.

The president’s stance highlights his administration’s resolve to address these issues, balancing economic and environmental concerns.
