The government has committed GH¢46 million to restart construction on the long-abandoned Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Teaching Hospital, which has been stalled for over a decade.

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made the announcement during the 50th Anniversary Grand Durbar of the KNUST School of Medical Sciences (SMS), revealing that contractors have been directed to return to the site within 30 days.

Initially launched as a $125 million project through a partnership between KNUST and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the hospital was expected to be completed within six years. However, 12 years later, construction remains unfinished.

Once completed, the teaching hospital is expected to enhance medical training for students and improve healthcare delivery for the university and surrounding communities.

In addition to the GH¢46 million allocated for construction, the Minister announced that GETFund will provide a further $38 million for equipping the facility, as part of its 2025/2026 funding plan.

“Charting the future means having a dedicated hospital to support the School of Medical Sciences,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.

“The contractor will return to the site in the next 30 days. We are also committing, through GETFund, $38 million for equipping the hospital.”

He also disclosed plans for the construction of new lecture theatres to support the university’s academic expansion.
