High Court places injunction on Daddy Lumba’s funeral

The Accra High Court has halted the planned burial of the late music icon Daddy Lumba after granting an injunction sought by his maternal family.

The injunction restrains the family head, Kofi Owusu, the first respondent in the case, from proceeding with the funeral arrangements.

It also prevents Transitions Funeral Home from releasing the musician’s remains until the court determines the substantive matter.

In its ruling, the court noted that affidavits before it suggested the immediate family had been excluded from the burial planning.

The judge emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the claims to ensure due process and proper family participation.

Although acknowledging that the delay could lead to extra costs, the court underscored that fairness and inclusivity in the funeral arrangements were paramount.

The court further directed the first respondent to hold a stakeholder engagement within three weeks to reach a consensus on a new burial date.

Additionally, it ordered that all funds raised for the funeral be separated from accounts belonging to the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation.

The applicants were also instructed to file an affidavit with the court registrar.
