Indonesian authorities, after a disastrous volcanic eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, located on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province, have commenced evacuation of locals and all other surrounding areas.
Reports indicate that the volcanic eruption, which took place on Monday, has negatively impacted thousands, displacing communities across six on Flores Island.
Local media have confirmed that one thousand, one hundred and sixteen (1,116) have been moved to safety by authorities while they compel a dozen more – an estimation of 10,000 to leave the affected area.
Head of the East Flores Communication and Information Service Hironimus Lamawuran called on those still in affected areas to evacuate immediately, adding: “We will collect data again and direct them to move to three evacuation points.”
The incident, per reports, comes after earlier emissions of thick brown ash columns up to two kilometres daily for the past week.
Indonesia is situated along the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” which has 130 active volcanoes, making it one of the world’s most seismically active countries.
