The Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate dismissal of Communications Minister Sam George, accusing him of mishandling negotiations with MultiChoice Ghana and misleading Ghanaians over DStv subscription prices.

Addressing the press in Accra on Thursday, October 2, Deputy Ranking Member on the Communications Committee, Charles Owiredu, said the minister falsely announced a 30% reduction in DStv prices, which MultiChoice later clarified was only a temporary promotional offer.

“This episode reflects poor judgment and a troubling lack of transparency on the minister’s part,” Owiredu stated.

MultiChoice issued a statement contradicting the minister’s claims, a move the Minority says undermines his credibility and raises questions about his conduct. The Minority also accused the minister of sidelining key regulatory bodies such as the National Communications Authority (NCA) and making unilateral decisions detrimental to Ghana’s digital sector.

They further demanded clarity on fines the minister claimed were imposed on MultiChoice. According to Owiredu, Ghanaians deserve to know the exact amount collected, where the money currently is, and how it has been used.

The Minority outlined three demands:

1. A public apology from the minister.

2. Full disclosure on the fines allegedly imposed on MultiChoice.

3. The minister’s resignation or immediate dismissal by the President.

“For this display of incompetence, deception, and disregard for due process, we in the Minority demand that the Minister apologize unreservedly to Ghanaians. We consider him unfit to continue as Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation,” Owiredu concluded.
