Individuals harbouring the hopes of returning to or leaving the country soon will have to wait for one more month as President Akufo-Addo has extended the border closure to Sunday, May 31st 2020.

The announcement was made at the 2020 Virtual Labour Day celebration held at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on Friday, May 1, 2020, as Ghana joins the rest of the world to celebrate workers.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the decision to extend the border closure further has been influenced by the realization that an ‘overwhelming majority’ of Ghana’s 2,074 COVID-19 cases are either from travelers or from contacts of travelers.

“With the suspension of all public gatherings and our schools still closed, Government has taken the decision to extend further the closure of our borders for 1 month, effective 1 am on Monday 4th May to Sunday, 31st May 31st, 2020

“We know that the overwhelming majority of cases came from travellers or contacts of travellers so we have no option but to keep our borders closed until we are confident that we have out in place measures to prevent travellers from importing the virus. These restrictions cannot and will not be a permanent feature of our lives but they are for now essential to our survival,” he said.
