The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the arrest of TikTok personalities Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof, along with social media activist Sir-Obama Pokuase, calling the actions of the Ghana Police Service “shamelessly biased” and “absolutely partisan.”
In a statement signed by National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, the group expressed outrage over what it described as the misuse of police resources to detain young citizens over viral video content.
“We are shocked that the police would waste resources to arrest and detain young citizens over comments that, while unsuitable for the moment, posed no actionable threat”, the NPP’s Youth Organizer shared in a statement.
Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof were arrested for making threatening remarks about President John Mahama, while Sir-Obama Pokuase is being investigated for sharing images and videos of individuals allegedly brandishing illegal weapons.
The Youth Wing accused the police of selective enforcement and political bias, citing the lack of arrests following the July 11 attack on NPP members during the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun.
“The Ghana Police Service should not be a wimp for the executive. Your motto is ‘Service with Integrity’, so we ask you, where is the integrity you speak of?”, he quizzed.
The group is demanding the “unconditional and immediate release” of the three individuals, insisting their detention “flies in the face of our democratic ethos”.
