The Ghana Police Service has refuted reports alleging that Convener of Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor was assaulted by officers while in custody.

In a statement issued on Sunday, October 20, the police described the claims as false and urged the public to dismiss them, suggesting they were attempts by Barker-Vormawor and his supporters to gain public sympathy.

According to the police, Barker-Vormawor, who is currently facing legal proceedings from the Office of the Attorney General, was granted bail by the High Court on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. The bail was set at GH¢20,000 with two sureties, without any justification requirements. However, efforts to secure the necessary sureties have so far been unsuccessful, preventing his release.

On October 19, police intelligence suggested that Barker-Vormawor was allegedly planning to undermine the security of other inmates and the police station. As a precaution, the police initiated plans to transfer him to a different cell.

The police reported that Barker-Vormawor resisted the transfer, and despite several efforts to persuade him, the situation escalated when officers tried to handcuff him. In the process, he sustained minor scratches on his right hand. He was promptly taken to a hospital for medical attention and later discharged.

The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order while safeguarding the rights and well-being of all individuals in their custody, including Barker-Vormawor.
