The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced that the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has started maintenance work on its gas pipeline from Nigeria to Ghana.

The maintenance activities scheduled from February 5 to March 2, 2025, aim to clean the pipeline (pigging) and replace subsea equipment.

According to WAPCO, during this maintenance period, gas supply to thermal plants in Tema from Nigeria will be curtailed, and gas transportation via reverse flow from Takoradi to Tema will also be halted, which will result in the shutdown of thermal plants in Tema that rely on gas to operate.

To minimize the impact on the nation’s power supply, stakeholders in the energy sector, led by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, have secured liquid fuel for some generating plants in Tema that have the capacity to operate on alternative fuel. These efforts are intended to keep the power supply stable during the maintenance period.

In a statement, GRIDCo said, “We understand the critical importance of maintaining a consistent power supply, and we are working tirelessly with our partners to ensure that the impact on consumers is minimized during this period.”

WAPCo also emphasized their commitment to the maintenance process, stating, “this maintenance work is essential to ensure the continued reliability and safety of the gas pipeline. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders and the public.”

GRIDCo has assured that, it is liaising with other stakeholders to work around the clock to mitigate any potential power supply challenges that may arise due to the shutdown.
