The Network of Women in Broadcasting (NOWIB) participated in a significant stakeholder meeting with the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, alongside other prominent Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to address critical gender equality and social protection issues in Ghana.

During the meeting, NOWIB President Maame Biamah Akwafo highlighted crucial concerns regarding access to justice for sexual assault survivors, particularly the financial barriers that prevent many victims from pursuing legal action. “The current high costs associated with processing rape cases and obtaining medical examinations create insurmountable obstacles for many victims, effectively allowing perpetrators to escape justice,” stated Maame Biamah Akwafo. “We need to make reporting more accessible and ensure rape kits are readily available at hospitals, with victims treated with dignity and respect.”

Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey emphasized the ministry’s commitment to collaboration with civil society organizations. “As a Ministry, we are poised to continue working with you and even do better. You have invaluable expertise that we can tap into to make this country a better place for all,” stated Minister Lartey. She highlighted President Mahama’s strong commitment to reducing vulnerability and assured stakeholders of the ministry’s dedication to strengthening social protection systems that benefit the majority.

The Gender Minister convened the meeting to discuss various pressing issues, including the implementation of the Affirmative Action Act, decentralization of the school feeding programme, and opportunities through the Women’s Development Bank. The discussion also covered critical topics such as child trafficking prevention and maintaining zero tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Ghana.

“NOWIB pledges its full support to the Minister’s initiatives and looks forward to collaborating on these vital issues affecting women and children in our society,” added Maame Biamah Akwafo. The meeting was also attended by NOWIB General Secretary Bridget Mensah, along with representatives from organizations including Wildaf, Netright, Abantu for Development, Ghana Women Forum, GenCED, Free the Slaves, Engage Now Africa, and Expertise France.

The Chief Director for the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, was also present at this significant engagement that marks a renewed commitment to strengthening partnerships for social protection and gender equality in Ghana.
