President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) at the University for Development Studies in Tamale, an initiative expected to provide free technical and vocational training to over 500,000 young Ghanaians over the next five years.

The programme is designed to equip young people with hands-on training, pairing them with experienced master craftsmen and women across various trades, including tailoring, welding, hairdressing, carpentry, auto mechanic, and more.

President Mahama emphasized the importance of practical skills development in tackling youth unemployment and creating a self-sufficient workforce.

“Each apprentice will receive a stipend, an allowance for transport. At the end of the programme, you will be given a certificate that shows you are professionally qualified in the trade you went to learn”.

He assured trainees that the certificates they receive would allow them to find jobs or pursue self-employment opportunities, marking a significant step toward economic empowerment.

The National Apprenticeship Programme is designed to be inclusive, with 45% of trainees being women and at least 5% of slots reserved for persons with disabilities.

He further mentioned that, special arrangements would also be made for other vulnerable groups to ensure equal access to opportunities.

“This initiative ensures that every young Ghanaian, regardless of their background, has the chance to gain meaningful skills and build a livelihood”.

Graduates of the programme will receive tools, equipment, and other resources to facilitate their transition into employment or entrepreneurship.

“At the end of your training, we will ensure that you have the necessary equipment and support to start your own business or secure a stable job”.

To guarantee the programme’s continuity and success, Mahama announced that 300 million Ghana Cedis has been allocated in the 2025 budget, reinforcing the government’s commitment to long-term youth empowerment.

“This is not a short-term project. We have made full financial provisions in the budget to ensure its sustainability for years to come”.
