University of Professionals Studies Accra

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has announced an internal investigation following the circulation of a viral video that appears to show students being turned away from class over what the institution considers “indecent dressing.”

In a statement signed by Dr. Ibn Kailan Abdul-Hamid, Head of the Marketing Department, the university expressed concern about the unauthorized recording and release of the footage.

He has thus cautioned the public against rushing to judgment based on a one-sided view of the situation.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid reaffirmed that UPSA’s professional dress code isn’t new or arbitrary, it’s a longstanding policy designed to prepare students for the expectations of Ghana’s professional world. He noted that the policy has been embraced by many alumni who now lead in various sectors.

While acknowledging that public opinion is divided, the university emphasized its core values of professionalism, discipline, and integrity.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid called for a balanced understanding that respects both institutional standards and the evolving ways students express their identities.

“We’re not trying to suppress individuality,” he explained. “Our goal is to harmonize self-expression with the professional conduct expected in the workplace.”

He appealed to stakeholders, alumni, parents, employers, and the wider public to support the university’s commitment to producing career-ready graduates.

“UPSA is more than an academic institution; it’s a professional brand,” he added. “That brand grows with time, but never loses its identity.”
