The Ghana Police Service has advised the public to be cautious of news being circulated on social media about fabricated stories of robberies and attacks.
According to the police, the developments are “calculated attempts by unscrupulous persons to cause fear and alarm to the public and to disturb the public peace”.
A press release signed by ACP David Eklu, Director General of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service issued on Monday, 5 March, indicated that an example of such “false publication” is the news that there were robbery attacks on certain banks in Accra.
The release stated that “reports from the regions show that there was no record of robbery on any bank in Ghana over the weekend”.
The police further indicated that several suspects have been arrested for various offences across the regions.
In Accra, the police arrested Musah Issaka at Amasaman for car snatching.
At Tema, the police arrested Salifu Sumaila, 20, for robbery. The suspect was already on the wanted list for jumping bail in two other offences including an attack on a Total filling station.
In the Ashanti Region, the police arrested Thomas Ayariga, 28; Kwadwo Francis, 26; and Daniel Mensah, 26, at Abuakwa. They were in possession of weapons and items adapted for robbery.
Also at Mampong, Innusah Braima, 25, was arrested for attacking a Total filling station.
The police service said it has intensified its patrolling of crime hot spots, as well as intelligence gathering and also reviewing operations to frustrate efforts of criminals, adding that those involved in crimes will be made “to face the full rigours of the law”.
