As organizations grow, milestones often become opportunities to reflect on achievements. For the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), its 40th anniversary has become a moment to deepen its commitment to people and empower dreams.
In recent years, GNPC has strengthened its reputation not only as Ghana’s national oil company but also as an institution focused on sustainable development, local participation, community engagement, and social investment. Through educational support programs, capacity-building initiatives, local content development, and strategic community partnerships, the Corporation has continued to expand its contribution to national development beyond energy production.
GNPC’s 40th anniversary celebrations set the stage for a year of activities aimed at celebrating achievements, honouring legacy, and creating impact. Among these activities have been stakeholder engagements, local content seminars, PELA STEM quiz, industry partnerships, and social investment projects designed to ensure that the anniversary leaves tangible benefits for communities.
Perhaps no initiative better captures this spirit than the staff-led renovation of Republic Road Nursery School in Tema Community 4.

The ’40-Forward’ Initiative
The project uniqueness is that it was driven entirely by GNPC employees who volunteered their time, resources, and expertise to improve the school’s learning environment. The project was not mandated by management; rather, it was a staff-led Corporate Social Investment (CSI) project under the theme “leaving footprints in communities.” It represents a heartfelt contribution from the staff to the very community that has housed their office facility for forty years.
Representing Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah the CEO of GNPC, Dr. Edward Appiah-Brafoh, the Director of Human Resources, highlighted the corporate culture that birthed this initiative: “This project reflects the true spirit of volunteerism, ownership, and service that employees believe should define the Corporation’s 40-year legacy. It demonstrates the collective responsibility that exists within GNPC and highlights the willingness of our employees to contribute beyond themselves for the benefit of society” he said.
High Praise from Local Leadership
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Hon. Ebi Bright, was present to commend the project. She expressed immense gratitude to the staff for taking the steering wheel on community development. “I am asking that the tagline of this staff-led initiative, leaving footprints in communities becomes our collective reason to do even more for our people. Thank you, Staff of GNPC for being a development partner to Tema” she noted.
Transforming the Learning Environment
The newly handed-over facility is a completely refurbished 4-unit kindergarten classroom block. The upgrade features new ceilings, modern tiling, and an attached washroom facility equipped with a water system to ensure constant water supply.
To foster early child development, the renovation incorporated intentional, forward-thinking designs:
Inspiring the Sciences: Vibrant mural cartoon paintings decorate the walls, showcasing petroleum production equipment and workers in full gear. These visuals are strategically designed to cultivate an early interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and career opportunities in Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry.
Inculcating Sustainability: The classroom furniture is uniquely crafted from recycled plastic teaching learners the value of environmental sustainability at a tender age.

A Call for Maintenance
The handover ceremony brought together key stakeholders, including the Municipal Director of Education, Madam Bernice Ofori, and the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Mavis Adatsi Jessie.
While expressing gratitude, the Headmistress urged the learners to use the facility strictly for its educational purpose and firmly admonished her teaching staff to prioritize its upkeep, reminding everyone that a strong “culture of maintenance” is key to preserving the social investment.
For the children of Republic Road Nursery School, the impact is immediate, a brighter, safer, and far more conducive learning environment. As GNPC looks toward its next chapter, the renovated school stands as a fitting symbol of what the Corporation hopes to achieve: transforming resources into realities, empowering dreams and success into shared prosperity.
