The Government of Ghana has declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods as part of efforts to restore sanitation and reduce the risk of further flooding.

In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the exercise will be undertaken under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee and themed, “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods.” The initiative is aimed at mobilising citizens to clean their communities, protect the environment, and safeguard lives.

According to the statement, President John Dramani Mahama has directed all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and Heads of Public Institutions, to leave their offices and actively participate in the clean-up exercise alongside residents in their respective communities.

The statement outlined a two-day schedule for the nationwide exercise. On Friday, July 10, personnel from all security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will begin the clean-up operation.

The general public is expected to join the security agencies and assemblies on Saturday, July 11, to intensify the exercise.

Activities during the clean-up will focus on desilting choked drains to ensure the free flow of water ahead of expected heavy rains, sweeping and clearing sand, weeds and debris from major roads and streets, as well as cleaning public spaces such as markets, lorry parks, recreational parks and communal waste collection points.

The Government described the initiative as a critical intervention and a wake-up call for the nation, noting that indiscriminate littering and plastic pollution have contributed significantly to blocked drainage systems, leading to preventable floods that have destroyed property and claimed lives.

The statement further directed all MMDAs to work closely with waste management companies to provide adequate logistics, including waste trucks, gloves, shovels and other cleaning tools at designated collection points.

Assemblies have also been instructed to ensure the immediate evacuation of all collected refuse and silt to prevent them from being washed back into drains.

The Government has urged all Ghanaians to actively participate in the exercise, stressing that collective action is essential to building cleaner, safer and more resilient communities.

It also called on citizens to demonstrate the country’s spirit of unity and civic responsibility under the slogan, “Clean Ghana, Save Lives.”
