The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government plans to recruit 16,000 health workers in 2026 to strengthen the country’s healthcare workforce and improve service delivery.
He revealed that, recruitment processes for about 8,000 of the planned intake have already been completed, with additional recruitment expected in the coming months.
Mr. Akandoh disclosed this while addressing participants at the 2026 Annual Health Summit in Accra on Tuesday, June 9.
He noted that the government is also intensifying efforts to deploy health professionals to underserved communities to help address staffing shortages and improve access to healthcare across the country.
“In 2025 alone, more than 14,000 health workers were placed on the government payroll. This year, we intend to recruit an additional 16,000 health workforce, with recruitment already completed for approximately 8,000. We are strengthening deployment to underserved areas,” he said.
The Health Minister further highlighted progress in the posting of medical doctors to underserved regions, indicating that the situation has improved significantly compared to previous years.
