One Ghana Movement criticizes destruction during ministerial vetting

The One Ghana Movement has firmly opposed the unacceptable conduct of members of the vetting committee of Ghana’s 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic.

According to the movement, the acts of vandalism and destruction of public property were undignified and a blatant affront to the nation’s democratic values.

In a statement issued on Friday, they emphasized the importance of the ministerial vetting process as outlined in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

“Ministerial vetting, as enshrined in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, is a crucial process designed to ensure that nominees for public office possess the necessary competence, integrity, and experience to serve in the public interest. This process fosters transparency, safeguards national interests, upholds the principle of checks and balances, and strengthens public confidence in governance” parts of the statement read.

The Movement voiced deep concern over the events of Thursday, January 30, 2025, in which members of the appointments committee allegedly engaged in actions that compromised the dignity of Parliament.

The statement emphasized that such misconduct damages Ghana’s democratic reputation and erodes public trust in state institutions.

The One Ghana Movement has therefore urged the Speaker of Parliament, Leadership of Parliament and the Chairman of the Vetting Committee to take decisive action in upholding order and discipline during “this critical national exercise.”

“We further call on the IGP and Attorney-General to immediately and as a matter of upholding the rule of law, investigate, arrest and initiate criminal processes against any person culpable in the destruction of state property as witnessed yesterday without fear nor favour”.

They believe by doing this, it will serve as the requisite deterrence for future attacks on state institutions and facilities by public officers elected to serve and not to destroy.
