Reckless overtaking on Kumasi-Accra road leaves 21 dead - Police

21 dead in head-on collision on Kumasi-Accra road – Police

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that 21 people died in a fatal accident on the Juaso-Nkawkaw road, near the Pra-River Junction, on Friday, March 15th, 2024.

The accident occurred around 5:50 pm when a Ford Transit minibus, driven by Yaw Egyiri (deceased), attempted to overtake several vehicles and collided head-on with an oncoming VW Sprinter bus. Both drivers were killed in the crash.

According to a police investigation, Mr. Egyiri was traveling from Konongo towards Accra with passengers onboard. The Sprinter bus, with registration number AS 4483-23, was also carrying passengers.

Survivors of the accident are being treated at various hospitals, including Juaso Government Hospital, Stewards Hospital at Yawkwei, Konongo Municipal Hospital, and Asante Akim Agogo Presbyterian Hospital.
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to mortuaries in Juaso, Konongo, and Yawkwei for identification, preservation, and autopsy.

The police are urging families who may have had relatives traveling on this route to contact the Juaso and Nkawkaw Police Commands if they are unable to reach their loved ones.
