Ghanaian defender Harrison Afful registered his first assist of the season for Columbus Crew as they were held to a 1-1 draw by New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference of the Major League Soccer on Saturday.
The Black and Gold lads dominated play in the early parts of the match and created some few scoring chances but failed to the initiative as their supporters at the MAPFRE Stadium urged them on.
Gregg Berhalter’s got their noses in front in the 26th minute courtesy American-born of Ghanaian descent Gyasi Zardes — his 10thgoal of the season. Ghana defender Harrison Afful crossed from the byline to Zardes, who headed it past Red Bull’s goalkeeper Luis Robles.
New York equalized early in the second half off a 57th minute free kick. As the clouds rolled in, the Black & Gold picked up their pace, again dominating possession in the final half-hour, but neither side could find the winner.
Afful and Lalas Abubakar lasted full throttle of the game while Jonathan Mensah was introduced as a 76th minute substitute for Columbus Crew.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Abu warmed the bench for the Crew.
