University of Ghana SRC disqualifies rapper Guru from Presidential contest

Popular Ghanaian rapper, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, better known by his stage name Guru, has been barred from contesting in the upcoming Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election at the University of Ghana.

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has issued a statement explaining that Guru’s disqualification from the presidential election was due to his failure to meet the required criteria.

A vetting report released on August 16, 2024, revealed that the SRC Vetting Committee had scrutinized the qualifications of various candidates, including those vying for the positions of treasurer, general secretary, president, and vice-president. However, the report identified that certain candidates did not meet the necessary standards, including Guru and Lawrence Edinam Egleh, who were found to be non-residential students, thereby rendering them ineligible to participate in the election.

According to the University of Ghana SRC Constitution, candidates for executive office must fulfill specific residential requirements. The constitution clearly states that to be eligible for a leadership position, a student must not only meet the qualifications outlined in their hall’s constitution but also reside in one of the university’s recognized halls.

Following a thorough review, the Vetting Committee determined that both Guru and Egleh failed to meet these essential criteria, thereby disqualifying them from contesting for the SRC presidency.
