At least 72 people have been confirmed dead following a launched attack of missiles by Israel’s military hours after brief celebration of a ceasefire deal reportedly reached between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Gaza’s Health Ministry has warned that the death toll is likely higher, as overnight bombardment continued despite celebrations anticipating the truce.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Hamas for delaying the ceasefire, citing a “last-minute crisis” over the agreement.
Hamas, however, maintains that it remains committed to the deal, which includes provisions for the release of hostages and prisoners, as well as humanitarian aid for Gaza’s devastated population.
Qatar, mediating the negotiations, stated that the truce could take effect by Sunday, aiming to end 15 months of conflict that have displaced thousands.
