The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has taken a firm stand against the recent surge in vigilantism and acts of mob justice in Ghana.

Speaking at the first edition of the Government Accountability Series held on Monday, July 14, 2025, the Minister described vigilantism as an act that goes against Ghanaian culture and values.

According to the Minister, Ghana has made tremendous progress in various sectors nationwide. However, these strides will be short-lived should vigilantism go unchecked.”I would like to encourage all Ghanaians not to do anything that will distract us from taking this path for ourselves and prosperity.”

“I want to remind myself and all Ghanaians [of] the provisions of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), that all of us need to be mindful about the activities of vigilantism,” he stated.

The Minister indicated that the government has made a clear decision regarding acts of vigilantism and will not condone such behaviour, regardless of political party or movement adding that such acts, disrupt Ghana’s democracy.
“I can assure you, not my party, not any group will we sit to see the resurgence of vigilantism.” he stated.

The latest reports of vigilantism are linked to the recent rerun of the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary elections. These acts, which led to attacks on several individuals by ‘macho men’, have been widely condemned by state leaders, including the Interior Minister and the Inspector General of Police.
